LAFFEY MATRIX

Many employment law statutes allow plaintiffs to collect legal fees as part of their relief. That means that if the plaintiff wins, he or she can often make the employer pay for the plaintiff's lawyers.

The Adjusted Laffey Matrix is a tool for assessing appropriate legal fees in cases where plaintiffs seek attorneys fees as part of their relief. The Matrix predicts the prevailing hourly rate for attorneys in the Washington-Baltimore area, based on the attorney's years in practice.

This Testimonial is from an Attorney who has successfully used the Adjusted Laffey Matrix in their practice. Due to their success using it in settlements, the Attorney prefers to not have their name mentioned.

"My Partner and I do local administrative hearings under a fee-shifting statute. We submit our bills directly to the government and do lump settlements with them about every six months. We had been using DOJ’s Laffey rates, but after we saw your web site, we decided to give yours a try and see what happened.

They didn’t blink. In our next settlement with them, they paid the Adjusted Laffey rates, which were substantially higher than the DOJ rates (50% more for one of us) without any comment on the increase. I can’t vouch for how your adjusted rates would stand up in court, but it looks like I may never need to know."
